Combustion mode:

 

Atmospheric boiler uses double grates back-fire natural ventilation, coal burns on water-pipe grates, and flame goes through down water-pipe grates meet flame burned on cast iron grates. High temperature flame fires water pipes and exhaust from chimney on boiler top.
